Editor's Notes 2022
What a treat for researchers with the publication of Huron County Photographers Part II. Larry Mohring has dug into the archives, digitized newspapers and sought out collectors who would share their photos and cards. An amazing amount of work and such a delight to read. Larry puts some humanity into the engraved photographers marks we see on our ances tors photos. His work will help date some of those treasures and add one more detail to some family trees.
How to get to Huron in 1851 is a group of letters John Carter has offered us. They give us something to think about when we try to organize travelling today.
Our final article was submitted by Jim Sherratt who spoke to the Society this spring. He article is the 'tale' of locating a cemetery. Often pioneer cemeteries be come overgrown and disappear from our landscape. Jim writes of the finding of the Cameron Street Cem etery in Bayfield.
We all continue to experience the results of the pandemic, and, looking back on 2021 activities, the Society responded well to keep its service to its mem bers continuing. Without a president since September 2020, your board has been led since then as a group effort to continue to keep our members and support ers informed and participating in the historical as pects of the County.
At our Annual General Meeting on May 25 we recapped all that the board has been busy with in the last year to bring you come interesting topics. Your board met thirteen times and organized presentations for seven General Meetings of members all via Zoom conferencing. We heard about the McLaren Life and Works exhibit by Shawn Henshall, the natural heri tage of the Little Lakes Road by Rebecca Garrett, the Sallows collection by Colleen Maguire, his book titled story of Narcisse Cantin of Zurich and the St Joseph Area Historical Society collection, a presentation on Stone Gardens by Liz and Pam Sangster and a recap of the Canada Company by Robert Lee. Each was preceded by an informative newsletter. Attendance at the presentations ranged from 30 to 61.
Our annual edition of Historical Notes edited by Rhea Seeger was published and distributed featuring Reflections on the Life and Works of Jack McLaren. Directors Mary Gregg and Susan Glousher also initi ated and were fully involved with the Huron County Museum's display of Jack McLaren works: we owe them our thanks
However, the Bus Trek planned for May 2020 by David Armstrong, a past-president, had again to be postponed. Through David's persistence, planning continued and the Trek finally launched on May 14 this year, a thoroughly enjoyable jaunt with friends and new acquaintances. A thanks from the Society is due to David, and to those who patiently awaited bet ter times for the tour to Bruce and Grey venues.
We have taken advantage of Zoom meetings. For future research purposes, Zoom is a cloud-based video conferencing service that is used to virtually meet with others - either by video or audio-only or both, all while conducting live chats - and it lets you record those sessions to view later.
Thank you for your ongoing support. With your infectious enthusiasm, the board will continue ef forts to keep us all aware of our past through future presentations, and hopefully site visits, in the months and time to come. By the way, we welcome new board members as well as new members at large. Should you be interested, or know of someone who may be, please contact us.
We want to thank the Ontario Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries for our Development Grant and our many members and supporters.
We have a full roster for Fall. Keep up with all the news with the renewal of your membership and receive newsletters via email/mail. We are even on Facebook! For further information contact us at hchs1965@gmail.com
