Message from HCHS President 2023

Greetings to all members and friends of the Huron County Historical Society! This 2023 issue of Huron Historical Notes continues the strong tradition of celebrating and sharing the richness of our Huron County history. Once again, for gathering this information and its preparation for printing, we owe a debt of gratitude to Rhea Hamilton Seeger and Larry Mohring. These two have devoted many hours to this project and we sincerely appreciate their commitment and skill.

The past year has proven to be another busy year for our Society. General meetings were held virtually and in-person as we have moved beyond the worst effects of the COVID pandemic. Details of these meetings and other plans for the Society continue to be sent out in the regular newsletters thanks to the energy and efforts of your Executive.

The Annual General Meeting was convened via Zoom on May 25, 2022. Since then, we have met either virtually or in-person as follows:

2022 - June 15 - Exec Committee via Zoom
August 17 - Exec Committee via Zoom
October 19 - Dinner meeting at Kate's Station followed by tour of Kildonan House
November 16 via Zoom - David Gillians: Lots More Bayfield Love
December 8 - Exec Committee at Seeger's

2023 - January 18 via Zoom - Andy Sparling:
R.C.A.F. Streamliners: Huron County's Best-Kept Musical Secret
February 15 via Zoom - Sinead Cox: Young Canuckstorians
March 8 - Exec Committee via Zoom
April 19 - Tour of the Menesetung Canoe Club and Maitland Lodge #33
May 13 - Bus Trek to Lucan and London

Our Society was also represented with displays:
August 27 - Zurich Beanfest
September 10 - Blyth Steam Show

Throughout the year we have been engaging with a growing online audience through Facebook.

As you can see, it has been a very busy year. For 2022-23 the Executive Council was composed of the following dedicated volunteers to whom the Society owes a round of thanks: President David Armstrong, Secretary/Treasurer Ralph Laviolette, Notes Editor Rhea Hamilton Seeger, Membership Chair Elaine Snell,

Facebook Co-ordinators Susan Glousher and Larry Mohring and Councillors Mary Gregg, James White, Mac Campbell and Liz Sangster.

If you have any questions about the Society, please call David Armstrong at 519-524-1156. We will be pleased to help. Our mailing address is HCHS, PO Box 3, Goderich ON N7A 3Y5.

We have taken advantage of Zoom meetings. For future research purposes, Zoom is a cloud-based video conferencing service that is used to virtually meet with others - either by video or audio-only or both, all while conducting live chats - and it lets you record those sessions to view later.

David Armstrong, President 2022-2023

Our grateful thanks to author Joseph Wooden for his wonderful book History of Exeter; well written and a joy to read. Mr. Wooden got the facts plus the stories that bring it all to life. We acknowledge we borrowed shamelessly from it and hope there are copies in many Huron county homes to share with the next generation.

Rhea Hamilton Seeger, Editor
