Message from the President 2019

Welcome to the 2019 Notes. Marcus Garvey stated that, "A people without the knowledge of their history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots." During the last year the members of the Society have continued to celebrate, learn and preserve the history of Huron County.

Huron County has a rich, variety of historically significant events, fascinating individuals and buildings of many different architectural styles. Huron County is experiencing the loss of many of the older buildings, especially barns and mills, in our rural community. It is wonderful to learn and support the work of the new preservation group, Maitland Mills Association.

Thank you to the Executive and many members for their contributions during the last year. Their efforts have ensured that the Society continues by maintaining and promoting the Society. Elaine Snell has been our membership person and is always willing to renew memberships or to have new members join the work of our Society. We were greatly saddened to hear of the loss of Marion Zinn, a long time member of our society. She was one of the leading historians for our local families. She
will be fondly remembered.

We are looking forward to the year ahead as the Society is entering a process of strategic planning and advocating for the space for archives, while continuing to have enlightened speakers and recognition of plaques throughout Huron County.

Please, enjoy the history recorded in these Notes. A huge thank you goes to the members and citizens of the county who have given countless hours of their time to research the fascinating history of our past. Once again, Rhea Hamilton Seeger has done an outstanding job of making it all come together in the production of the 2019 Notes.

Vicky Culbert
President
