President's Greetings

Editor's Note: When our stirling president wrote this intro in the early spring before we knew the full impact of COVID-19, we were all excited about the season's line up. Like many other organizations all our events have been cancelled or put on hold, but we are still working on research for our plaque program and for future Notes. Members can check their news.letters for more details of events.

Welcome to the 2020 Huron County Historical Society Notes. As my term as President is com.ing to an end, it is interesting to reflect upon the last year and to see the plans that have been made for the year ahead. The members of the Board of Directors continue to plan special events, meetings, and community involvement opportunities as well as keep informed and participating in Historical Huron County meetings.

Thank you to the board members and others for the projects that they have organized: Larry Mohring organized the Society's files of records, in addition to planning and running our fall meeting in Exeter he has contributed greatly to these 'Notes' along with Rhea Hamilton Seeger; Dr. James White for his informative speaking session and book reports for the Newsletter; and Graham Booth has reported on history books from Huron County as well as being a huge asset to the marketing of the society.

I would also like to acknowledge Elaine Snell and family who organize our Memberships and the Society's booth at the Zurich Bean Festival, and Ralph Laviolette who serves as the Secretary/ Treasurer and continues to provide excellent minutes and financial reports as well as planning our last fall meeting in Brussels to learn of the work restoring the Mills on the Maitland River.

This year has been very different for our society, but by keeping apart we hope to keep everyone safe. The spring meetings and events have not been cancelled but rather postponed until the pandemic has passed. Exciting plans have been made for an art exhibit featuring local artist, the late Jack McLaren. This wonderful display of his art and connection to our local history is in partnership with the Huron County Museum. It has been spearheaded by our Directors Susan Glousher and Mary Gregg.

The spring "Trek to Bruce and Grey" organized by David Armstrong has been postponed until a Saturday, in October and should be informative and fun. I am hoping everyone can attend.

Mac Campbell has also planned an outing to the hamlet of Carlow. At that meeting we will learn more about the restoration of the Carlow general store and more of the history of the crossroad community. The date has yet to be established.

The Society is planning a Heritage Day in Goderich on Sunday, September 13th that will be full of activities and information for children of all ages

Your support and membership is important to the health of the Society and we look forward to seeing you in the year ahead.

Vicky Culbert
President
